Mariano TOMATIS

Magic Books - New York - March 13-27, 2015

Hackers are not satisfied with the functions offered by ordinary computers: to increase their potential, they study machines, alter their structure and tweak them with new elements. Frustrated by the status quo, those pirates change prepackaged equipment, creating deviant objects more interesting and versatile than the original. Hacking a book has the same purpose: broaden its potential and make it perform unusual and surprising tasks - a necromancer would say: activate its magical powers. But if digital hackers are born with computers, book-hackers have a centuries-long history, which dates back to the advent of the book. Along the path of an unusual Goose Game, this interactive exhibition mixes storytelling, technical notes for designers, secrets revealed and practical ideas to make a subversive object out of a book - in a true celebration of the epical, underground story of book hacking; its constant presence at the margins of the mainstream offers unvaluable stimuli for those who trust in the subversive power of creativity and wonder.
